Published: 10 March 2010
AV Festival 10, the biennial international Festival of electronic arts, is taking place from 5th to the 14th March 2010.
The Festival’s main theme is energy: a universal force that connects, transforms and renews life. Exploring energy from scientific, technological, environmental and spiritual perspectives a variety of work will be on show across the North East in a variety of locations from NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and beyond.

Detailed below are the events that are taking place in Sunderland:
Buddha Machines
In Buddha Machines at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens the China-based creators will work with a special guest musician to install a sound installation in the tropical splendour of the Winter Gardens instilling a restful, Zen-like experience.
A new sound installation planted in the tropical splendour of the Sunderland Winter Gardens. The Buddha Machine is ambient music’s answer to the ipod; a small battery powered electronic music player that produces continuous enchanting sound loops.
Partly inspired by a popular Chinese gadget that intones Buddhist prayers, the machine was created by the electronic music duo FM3.
Influential British musician Simon Fisher Turner will install over 50 Buddha Machines in the Winter Gardens, using the machines to create a hypnotic new remix.
Simon Fisher Turner is renowned for his film soundtrack compositions, most notably for Derek Jarman films including Caravaggio , The Last of England and The Garden
Bill Fontana: Wind Phase
From the 5th March to the 29th March Monday 29 March a sound sculpture by internationally renowned Bill Fontana will be at The Place in Sunderland. Known for his pioneering experiments in sound, his work explores the acoustic energy around us, using the physical environment as a vibrant source of musical information.
He has realised many sound sculptures that explore the hidden sounds of architecture, including the inner workings of the iconic Big Ben and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Sunniside Partnership present Fontana's work Wind Phase, a sound and video sculpture inspired by a landscape punctuated by wind turbines.
SDNA: Incandescent
Outside the Pilgrim Pub on Fawcett Street light installation Incandescent will be on display from the 5th March to the 14th March. This is an exploration of the incandescent light bulb, from its birth 130 years ago to its impending extinction. This new interactive audio-visual work by digital artists' collective SDNA is installed in the Pilgrim Pub, once part of the Athenaeum, and will link with lighting installations across the centre of Sunderland.
It also commemorates that in this building in 1846, Joseph Swan attended a lecture by physicist W Richardson that inspired him to invent the light bulb.
The Jump Films
A series of films will on display at the Reg Vardy Gallery from the 5th March to the 8th April.
The Jump Films explore the relationship between performance art and the documentation that survives the physical event. Each film documents a dramatic jump, or fall, captured at thousands of frames per second and shot with a high-speed camera that is normally used in scientific research or car-crash testing.
The three films are each shot in contradictory styles and at different speeds. One film seems to document an abortive suicide attempt, another a stunt from a Hollywood movie, and the third as an absurd Olympic event. Originally made on 16mm film, this new HD presentation re-stages the work in a new medium.
