Swim Unlimited

Published: 07 January 2009

Swimmers both young and old can now go swimming for free. Anyone aged 16 or under and those aged 60 or over will get free admission to Sunderland Aquatic Centre, Washington Leisure Centre , Raich Carter Leisure and the two new 25 metre pools that have recently been built at Silksworth and at Hetton.

Sunderland City Council is one of 211 councils offering a free swimming scheme as part of a two year project which aims to encourage more people to get involved in sport and physical activity. All that you will need to swim free is proof of your age and a valid Life Card for the Sunderland Aquatic Centre and Washington Leisure Centre, as well as the two new pools at Silksworth and Hetton opening later this year or a Connect Card if you wish to use the Raich Carter Leisure Centre. The Life card is available for free for those aged 18 and under. You can find the application form for the Life Card here

For those age 16 and under, free admission means anytime outside of school hours. You can swim for free at any general swim session but if you wish to attend the Adult and Family Sessions you will need to be accompanied by an adult. Times of sessions vary depending on the location – contact the venue for more details. For details of swimming times call Sunderland Aquatic Centre on 0191 5616161, Washington Leisure Centre on 0191 2193400 and the Raich Carter centre on 0191 5532333.The free scheme does not cover activities led by an instructor such as Aquafit Classes or Learn to Swim Sessions.

The free swimming scheme is jointly funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Department of Health, Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Communities and Local Government.
