Cost of travel
Published: 26 August 2008
Transport chiefs have frozen all Metro fares for 2010 to help passengers through the recession. Councillor David Wood, Chairman of the ITA (Integrated Transport Authority) stated that Metro provides excellent value and will offer even better value in the year ahead as a result of our decision
Under 16 card holders can now travel at the concessionary cheap rate fare seven days a week, unrestricted, both through the day and during the evening.
Tthe Child DaySaver costs from £1.10 with a single ticket costing 60p but Under 16 Card holders are still able to buy a 50p single ticket or a Child Allday Ticket or Cat for just a £1 a day for unlimited travel throughout Tyne and Wear using buses, the Metro and the Shields Ferry. Cats can be brought from bus drivers or from Metro ticket machines. Andy Bairstow, Nexus Communications Director is encouraging young people to get hold of a Nexus Under 16 Card the cheapest ticket for young people living in Tyne and Wear is a £1 Cat or 50p single (and on the) Metro a Cat is now 10p cheaper than a Child Daysaver, so we want to make sure young people get the right ticket, particularly those traveling every day for school
Do you have an Under 16 Travel Card?
You need it to prove that you live in Tyne and Wear and that you are between 5 and 15 years of age on August 31st before the start of your current academic year in order for you to receive an Under 16 Travel Card.
The Nexus Under-16 Card is available free and it allows you to pay child fares for public transport on school days as well as during the school holidays and at weekends.
Once you have one be sure not to leave the house without it!
You can get the application form from any Nexus Travel Shop or you can download one here The applications must then be posted to Nexus.
Meanwhile, School Pass season tickets prices are being frozen by Nexus at £150 a year, so that children need not pay more during the week for school journeys - when their evening and weekend travel costs are getting cheaper.
The annual Metro Student card for all zones is to stay at £386. Four weekly Metro Student Cards for inner Newcastle and inner Sunderland have come down from £31 to £30.
